Foam Roller

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Wed, 07/18/2012 - 02:48
Product Link:  http://www.amazon.com/fit-Basic-White-Foam-Roller/dp/B000WG0L74/ Cost:  $15-$45

I've long been a believer in the foam roller for training. They are great to stretch out your muscles before or after a run. There are a variety of exercises you can do with the foam roller (see this link at bodybuilding.com). I find using the foam roller especially useful with the quads, hamstrings and low back. There are some fancy models available with trigger point grids are available, but I've never tried them.

It's a great addition to any home gym.

Gu Energy Gel, Roctane, Vanilla Orange, 24-Count

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Wed, 07/18/2012 - 02:38
Product Link:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003A0AFI4/ Cost:  $45 ($2 each)

I never race or do long training runs without some GU on my hydration belt. GU Roctane contains some caffeine, which some people don't like. My personal favorite flavor is the orange vanilla. Gu Energy Gel has just the right punch to energize you until the end of your race. Gu was created to be digested while exercising, which means no stomach cramping or indigestion during you're workout. These gels contain maltodextrin, which is the key for your body to get back all those carbohydrates it has been losing and replenish it so you can perform at your peak.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-touch Sunblock with Helioplex Spf 30

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Wed, 07/18/2012 - 02:24
Product Link:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013OMHTE/ Cost:  $7-$20

Training in the Arizona sun can damage one's skin, so sunblock is critical. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-touch isn't greasy and is suppose to not irritate your eyes. Now for the most part, I agree with the claims regarding the eyes. I've found no sunblock product that doesn't irritate your eyes.  I primarily use it for my face and other products for my arms and legs.

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Mon, 07/16/2012 - 00:13
Product Link:  http://www.amphipod.com/products/holders/music/electronics/armpod Cost:  $25

I've gone thru quite a few iphone arm bands since I took up exercise. All the previous ones shared one common flaw -- phastic sheeting between the case and your phone. It made using the touch screen suboptimal. These other models also had properly constructed arm bands. So I was very happy when a teammate introduced me to the Amphipod ArmPod.

Cytomax Sports Drink

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Sun, 07/15/2012 - 23:23
Product Link:  http://www.amazon.com/CytoSport-Cytomax-Sport-Energy-Tropical/dp/B000G6ZEBS/ Cost:  $15-$30 (depends on size)

When I started training for my first marathon, I was told that Cytomax would be the sports drink offered on the course. So I started training with cytomax and then on race day, I learned they changed to G2.

I'm told a lot of people can't tolerate cytomax, but I actually love it. I order both the tropical and orange flavor. Cytomax mixes ensure proper hydration, steady energy and reduced fatigue during exercise. In addition to helping with hydration, it helps flush lactic acid, which makes a huge difference in recovery after long runs.

Road ID

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Sun, 07/15/2012 - 16:45
Product Link:  http://www.roadid.com/Common/Default.aspx Cost:  $15-$30

I try to never leave home without my Road ID (sometimes I do forget). I don't carry my wallet on runs or rides, so Road ID is my source of identification if anything should happen to me. The braclet gives me piece of mind. They have a variety of models, but I wear the one pictured above.  It has some reflective threads on it and it's comfortable to wear. I hardly even notice it is on my wrist. The road ID has my name and emergency contact information on it. Also there it's linked to a profile online that emergency responders can access with additional details.

Bodyglide Original Anti-Chafe Balm

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Sun, 07/15/2012 - 00:17
Product Link:  http://www.amazon.com/BodyGlide-BGCB-Bodyglide-Original-Anti-Chafe/dp/B005L8YVRO Cost:  $6-$15 depend on size

"You put it where?" is the typical reaction to someone first being initiated into the circle of those who swear by Bodyglide. You only need to experience chaffing once to know that you never want to experience it again on a run or bike ride. Bodyglide helps product those "sensitive" areas and other body parts from chafing sores. I've also learned that it helps prevent blisters, so for races I apply it to my feet as well. I also use it to prevent chafing from my heart rate monitor strap and my running shorts waist band.

Amphipod RunLite 4 Hydration Belt

Run Matt Run Product Reviews - Sat, 07/14/2012 - 23:41
Product Link:  http://www.amazon.com/Amphipod-RunLite-Hydration-Belt-Size/dp/B002PA4V8A/ Cost:  $45

When I started running, I resisted a fuel belt for a long time. I instead perferred the CamelBak hydration system. My coaches predicted I would come around and I did. Now I can't think of not running without the Amphipod belt. Hydration is critical for all runners, but especially in hot climates like Arizona.
